Ricotta Crostini with Balsamic Caramelized Onions, Honey & Sea Salt

I was asked to make a few of the recipes from The Naptime Chef and seeing that I have a board meeting to make appetizers for; this seemed like a perfect recipe. It was easy to make and well received. A perfect recipe to have in my back pocket for this coming holiday season for appetizers in a pinch.

Makes approximately 25 crostini

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 20 minutes


  • 1 large baguette
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 2 large yellow onions, finely chopped
  • 1 pinch kosher salt
  • 4 teaspoons balsamic vinegar
  • 11/2 cups (12 ounces) fresh ricotta cheese
  • 1/4 cup wildflower honey
  • Sea salt for garnish



  1. Heat the oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Slice the baguette into 1/2-inch-thick rounds and place them on an ungreased cookie sheet. Toast the rounds in the oven for approximately 8 to 10 minutes, until lightly golden brown, then remove them from the oven and allow them to cool.
  3. Set a small skillet over medium-low heat. Add the olive oil, chopped yellow onions, and salt. Cook the onions, stirring continuously, for about 18 to 20 minutes, or until the onions turn a deep brown and are caramelized and crispy around the edges. Stir in the balsamic vinegar and cook for 1 minute more. Remove from the heat and allow the mixture to cool slightly.
  4. To assemble, place one heaping teaspoon of ricotta cheese on each round, followed by a teaspoon of the balsamic caramelized onions. Drizzle the top with a small amount of honey and sprinkle lightly with sea salt. Repeat to make the remaining crostini.
  5. Make-Ahead Tips: Caramelize the onions up to a day ahead of time. To reheat them before assembling, warm them in a skillet over medium heat for 2 to 3 minutes, or heat them in the microwave.
